Despite the youth of its homeland, Fisher Paykel dates back to the 1930s. It was founded by Maurice Paykel and Sir Woolf Fisher in 1934 and began with the manufacture of designs made under license- they imported Crosley Refrigerators and Maytag washing machines. The company developed from there and had a couple of technological and economical breakthroughs as it aimed to make a more upmarket version of the kitchen appliances that were already available on the market. Today, Fisher Paykel is one of New Zealands most successful and enduring businesses.
In 1939, Fisher Paykel began to manufacture within its own country and its first home-grown appliances were the wringer washing machines and fridges. They must have been doing something right because several market firsts and design awards later, the company now owns over 420 patents and has over 4000 employees. Both Maurice Paykel and Sir Woolf Fisher have now passed on, but the company is still in family hands and Gary Paykel, Maurice's son, is the Chairman of the company.
Fisher Paykel is a very environmentally aware company, which is good from an ethical point of view, but with an energy efficiency rating of A, its products could also save you money on electric bills compared to lower rated appliances. Fisher Paykel became environmentally friendly far earlier than many other companies though, eliminating ozone- destroying chemicals in 1994 and has been researching products that are increasingly environmentally friendly ever since.
Proof of Fisher Paykel's dedication to the environment lies in the number of awards they have won for just that: Their EcoSmart clothes washer is the top rated energy efficient washer in the United States, including front loaders and top loaders. It was rated C2 by the Consortium of Energy Efficiency. Their fridges and washing machines have been chosen for the trial off-grid system on an island in Queensland, Australia. Smart Drive™ won the Rutherford Award in New Zealand for minimised environmental impact. And they won the "Galaxy Star Award" in 2001 for their commitment to energy efficiency and the environment.
The company has manufacturing sites located in Auckland, New Zealand; Clyde, Ohio, USA and Italy and its products are available in over 80 countries worldwide. In April this year, it announced the closure of three of its manufacturing facilities in Dunedin - New Zealand, Cleveland - Australia and Huntington Beach -USA Although the company was founded in 1934, Fisher Paykel Appliances was not officially listed until 2001. This is due to the separation of Fisher Paykel Industries Ltd into Fisher Paykel Healthcare Ltd and Fisher Paykel Appliances Ltd.
