Who are Fagor?
There are very few big Spanish manufacturers in the kitchen appliance industry, but Fagor is one of the fastest growing companies in Spain at the moment, and is part of the ‘Mondragón Corporación Cooperativa,’ or ‘The Mondragon Co-operative Corporation. The corporation that is Mondragon today had far more humble origins than its current status as a constitution of over 150 companies across the globe, making it the largest worker corporation.


Mondragon began in a workshop in the Basque Country of Spain in 1956. It was named after the town that it was founded in and has a romantic story surrounding its beginnings.

Where did Fagor begin?
It began with a young priest who moved to Mondragon in 1941. His name was Father José María Arizmendiarrieta and he was struck by the poverty of the town following the Spanish civil war. There was mass unemployment and so he decided to open a school that was integral to the development of the cooperative movement. It was five graduates of this school that founded the company that is ow known as Fagor. It was the first cooperative enterprise and was originally called ULGOR, a name which took the initials of each of their surnames. In the beginning, the companies focus was on the manufacure of petrol based heaters and cookers.

How big are Fagor?
Not only have its lines of products expanded, but the Mondragon Co-operative Corporation currently brings together 122 industrial companies, six financial organisations, fourteen retailers, four research centres, one university, and fourteen insurance companies and international trade services. It has a turnover of 14,700 million pounds and a workforce of 69 thousand people. Over 6 thousand of these staff are employees of Fagor and can be found in factories spanning three continents- Europe, America and Africa. Fagor also has a major sales network in over 80 countries on five continents. 44% of all of Fagor’s sales are currently international in competitive areas of the world. Fagor manufactures under several brand names, including Fagor, of course, Edesa, Aspes, Mastercook, Brandt, De Dietrich, and Fagor Commercial.

Do Fagor just sell appliances?
No! Fagor spends 50% of their investments on research, development and innovation in all fields and lines of business in order that it can keep producing innovative products and surpass the expectations of their customers. The ‘Fagor Spirit’ is to aim for total customer satisfaction. It is this philosophy that may have led Fagor to produce their home automation systems, which allow you to control your domestic appliances from any phone. Fagor has called it the Fagor Domotic Network.
