Home Appliances

Many companies specialise in home kitchen appliances. The following are some of the most famous and respected global brands.

The joint venture between Bosch and Siemens, which created BSH Bosch und Siemens Hausgeräte GmbH (BSH), gave rise to one of the biggest home kitchen appliance manufacturers in the world. Set up in 1967, the joint venture between Robert Bosch and Siemens AG has gone on to operate 43 factories across 14 countries in Europe, the USA, South America and Asia. In total, the company now employs around 39,000 people.

As you would expect from a company specialising in home kitchen appliances, BSH offers a huge range of brands. The main two brands, Bosch and Siemens themselves, are undoubtedly two of Europe’s best-selling and best known names. However, the BSH umbrella also covers a huge range of products and brands to suit every customer’s needs. Specialised brands such as Neff, Thermador, Viva and Ufesa cater for the whole market, from budget to luxury appliances. BSH also keeps a solid local presence, with regional brands such as Pitsos, Balay, Lynx and Profilo ensuring high sales in their respective locales.

AEG was founded in 1887, and has since provided home kitchen appliances with the attention to detail and efficiency common to German manufacturers. In 2004, the company changed its name to AEG-Electrolux after Electrolux bought the AEG brand name. Despite the name change however, AEG-Electrolux still promotes the ideals the brand was formed on over a century ago. The company’s slogan, “Perfekt in Form und Funktion”, is applied to every one of its products, and consumers are reaping the benefits. The brand now incorporates a full range of home kitchen appliances, which allow customers to “control household tasks and represent precision, performance, order, confidence and pride,” according to the company website.

The Hotpoint brand is well known in Britain, and rightly so as the UK brand has been producing high quality home kitchen appliances for almost a century. Founded in 1911, Hotpoint initially specialized in fridges and washing machines. Most homes in Britain now contain a Hotpoint appliance of some kind, be it a fridge or washing machine, or a cooker, tumble dryer or even a toaster. In 2007, the now Indesit-owned Hotpoint was merged with the Italian company’s own Ariston brand, creating Hotpoint-Ariston.

A company who has only recently come to prominence with its bold and colourful range of fridges is the Italian brand Smeg. Its ‘FAB’ range of retro-style home kitchen appliances are eye-catching, but are also high-quality products. Indeed, Smeg home kitchen appliances are now verging on pop-culture icons, having appeared in films such as V for Vendetta, been used by TV chefs like Jamie Oliver, and even having been parodied by British favourites Wallace and Grommit. However, the company is this year celebrating its 50th anniversary, having been founded in Italy in 1948 by Vittorio Bertazzoni. Originally called Smalterie Metallurgiche Emiliane Guastalla, the name was later shortened to Smeg, and has since become known as a manufacturer of quality, highly fashionable home appliances.
