Indesit
The company that is now known as Indesit went through quite a few changes and internal modifications before it became the organisation it is today. Now one of the largest manufacturers of Appliances in Europe, Indesit had a far more humble beginning in Fabriano, Italy. Indesit was set up in 1930 and was originally called Industrie Merloni after its founder, Aristide Merloni. Today, Indesit manufactures a whole range, including washing machines, washer dryers, tumble dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators, cookers, freezers (Indesit also offer a range of built in as well)

But back in the 1930s when it was first set up, Indesit just manufactured balances. The founder managed to amass itself a 40% share in the balances market by the 1950s and so began branching out into other areas such as liquid gas bottles, gas hobs to use with the liquid gas and domestic boilers. Indesit gradually extended its range of domestic appliances under another brand name- Ariston. The founder died in 1970 and the company was split three ways into separate divisions and each division was managed by a different member of the family. The three divisions that Indesit was then split into were called Merloni Elettrodomestici, Merloni Termosanitari and the Engineering Division. Vittorio took control of the Elettrodomestici division in 1975, which would not become the Indesit Company until thirty years later.

Vittorio had started working for the family business in 1960, ten years before the death of his father. But the control of Indesit is not the only big achievement of Vittorio's life. Vitorrio has a degree in Economics and Commerce, which undoubtedly has helped him greatly in his business career. So much so that in 1980, despite already being Chairman of Merloni Elettrodomestici, he became President of Confindustria for four years. On his departure from Confindustria, he was elected president of Centromarca, another Italian firm, for a further four years. He has also held presidencies at Assonime, which is an Italian Association of public limited companies and has now been made a Commander of the British Empire. He was also the director of Telecom from 2006- 2007. So quite a talented guy all in all, but back to Indesit.

Vittoria Merloni managed to acquire Indesit in 1985. Elettro domestici traded under various brand names for quite a few years, including Indesit, Ariston,Hotpoint, Scholtes and Stinol. Indesit was the best known white goods brand in Italy at the time so it made sense to eventually change the name to the Indesit Company in 2005.

Last year (2007), the Indesit share of the white goods market was around 14%. It sold approximately 16 million appliances in 36 countries across the globe and has seventeen production plants employing over 17,000 staff. Indesit is the second largest producer of domestic appliances in Europe, Electrolux being the first.
